For many women, a personality disorder diagnosis arrives after years of being told their responses to the world around them are the problem, rather than the experiences that shaped those responses. At Grace & Emerge, we understand the relationship between personality disorders and complex trauma, and we build treatment plans that address both.
A personality disorder is a pattern of inner experience and behavior that differs significantly from cultural expectations, causes distress or functional impairment, and persists across time and contexts. They are often adaptive responses to environments, relationships, or experiences that were unsafe, unpredictable, or overwhelming.
The most common personality disorders treated in women's behavioral health settings include:

Research consistently shows a strong relationship between complex trauma, early attachment disruptions, and the development of personality disorders, particularly BPD.
Women who experienced childhood neglect, emotional invalidation, abuse, or unstable caregiving environments are at significantly elevated risk. Many of the features that define personality disorders, including difficulty regulating emotion, unstable relationships, identity disturbance, and self-destructive behavior, reflect the nervous system's adaptations to conditions where safety and consistency were not reliably present.
BPD is among the most heavily stigmatized diagnoses in mental health, and among the most treatable.
Women with BPD often experience intense emotional pain, fear of abandonment, difficulty maintaining stable relationships, and patterns of self-harm or impulsivity that are deeply connected to unresolved trauma. At Grace & Emerge, BPD treatment is integrated into trauma treatment.
Our program includes Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), one of the most evidence-supported treatments for BPD, alongside EMDR, somatic approaches, and relational modalities specifically designed to address the attachment wounds that underlie many BPD presentations.
Treatment for personality disorders at Grace & Emerge is individualized, trauma-informed, and relational at its foundation. Depending on the presenting diagnosis and treatment plan, care may include:
The structure of our continuum, including residential-level community living, daily therapeutic support, and a step-down through Phases 1, 2, and 3, provides the consistency, relational safety, and intensity that personality disorder treatment requires.
