Discovering Your Values: Helping Women Seek Success in Treatment

Share:

We understand on a very personal level that recovery from substance use disorder (SUD) and co-occurring conditions requires motivation and a strong commitment to change. Your values can actually contribute to the outcome of treatment.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), “A person’s recovery is built on his or her strengths, talents, coping abilities, resources, and inherent values.” Emerge Recovery TX provides evidence-based treatment and a compassionate community where women can heal from SUD and co-occurring mental health issues while learning to identify their strengths and values.

How to Identify Your Values During Treatment

Most people don’t think about their values in day-to-day life. With so many other responsibilities, it is understandable that other things may take priority. You may have a family, career, education, or other areas to distract you from building strong personal values.

Nevertheless, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), “Values are important to us; they are our understanding of what matters most in our lives.” To help you develop a meaningful life, our clinical team will guide you through identifying and establishing personal boundaries and values while you are in treatment.

Exploring your thoughts and beliefs often reveals your values. For example, you could ask yourself the following questions:

  • What gives your life meaning?
  • Who do you look up to and why?
  • What makes you feel good about yourself?

You may not know the answers to these questions. Perhaps you need help identifying which areas of your life give you the greatest sense of peace and joy. Fortunately, we have built a care team at Emerge Recovery TX that uses evidence-based methods and holistic therapies to help you connect more deeply with your values.

Your Values Can Help You Heal

At Emerge Recovery TX, we are committed to helping our clients discover their passions and values during treatment. Our clinicians empower women to pursue whatever makes them feel good about themselves and finding their place in the world. According to Scientific Reports, “[V]alues foster a feeling of meaning.”

As a woman in recovery, you get to decide what your life looks like after treatment. Through this process, you can expand and strengthen the best parts of yourself. The care team at Emerge will support you by committing to those changes as well.

Your values can help you heal by doing the following:

  • Providing a sense of comfort and safety
  • Reducing the negative effects of life stressors
  • Increasing resiliency and providing a sense of purpose

Values Help You Respond to Everyday Situations

Recovering from SUD and co-occurring mental health issues takes dedication and a desire to build a healthier life. Honesty, integrity, ambition, and willingness are values you can use to move forward and grow in your recovery. Treatment can set you on the right path, but it’s up to you to choose how you respond to everyday situations. Your values will shape how you react to others and the challenges you face in recovery. For example, you can use your love for family and personal values to motivate your own growth and healing.

How to Achieve Success in Treatment

Success in treatment looks different for everyone. Some women may consider remaining mentally healthy and gaining life skills a success. Others may begin a new career and build additional work skills to feel successful. The care team at Emerge is there to support you through treatment no matter how you define success.

Defining personal values helps clients achieve treatment success. Some common values people adopt include:

  • Loyalty
  • Kindness
  • Respect
  • Courage
  • Creativity
  • Patience
  • Dependability
  • Generosity
  • Independence

Discovering New Ways to Succeed

While going through the recovery process, you will have many opportunities to succeed. You will repeatedly meet recovery goals and find new ways to grow in your recovery, personal life, and career. The team at Emerge Recovery TX is here to help you heal and grow.

Of course, recovery from mental health and substance use disorders is the primary goal of treatment. However, you also need to focus on what comes next. You can take advantage of having an individualized care team by getting help while you prepare for what you want to do next. Many women choose to go back to school, change their careers, or embrace other healthy changes to fill their new life in recovery. If you want to be more creative, our care team can assist you in exploring art therapy or art classes as well.

Furthermore, women at Emerge can take advantage of our sister program, Grace Recovery TX. Grace is a sober and transitional living community partnered with Emerge Recovery TX. The Grace Recovery community offers experiential coaching and other services to guide women as they discover new avenues of growth. Combining clinical programming and experiential coaching ensures women have the support and resources to pursue new interests and passions, contributing to the process of identifying values.

Emerge Recovery TX Respects Your Values

No matter what you value in your life, our team at Emerge Recovery TX can help you find ways to expand your values and incorporate them as you navigate the challenges of early recovery. A large part of outpatient treatment with our program involves helping women find healthy ways to manage their conditions while facing stressors. You will feel less stress as you create concrete values and work with your individualized care team to incorporate them into your treatment.

As you define your values, you will become more confident about what you expect from yourself and the people around you. This confidence can relieve some of the stress and pressure of daily events. You also can use individual and group therapy sessions to aid in the process of unearthing these essential insights.

Over time, we have found that the women in our program gain self-awareness and a greater understanding of the connection between their thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors. With this knowledge, you’ll be more prepared for a life of long-term recovery and wellness.
